3D-printed fashion takes Malaysian catwalk by storm


Bring together Belgium-based 3D printing innovators Materialise and Malaysian fashion designer Melinda Looi, and the result is a runway full of intricate, 3D designs.
Materialise, known for bringing 3D artwork and printing together, approached the fashion designer to collaborate on a collection for the runway. The team of up to eight people — including three model creators, two engineers and designers — then drew up the plans for fashion accessories before converting them into CAD files suitable for the 3D printing process.

Once printed at Materialise headquarters in Belgium, the designs — built around an avian theme — were then ready for the catwalk. The team documented the design and manufacturing process for the catwalk show below:
